Born in Ketchikan, Dick Miller grew up in Southeast Alaska spending much of his time in the woods and on the water that are now the subjects of his paintings. At thirteen, he worked a summer on a fish survey boat. Later, Miller was employed for more than five years on various tug boats. It is not surprising that he paints Southeast's marine scenes with both feeling and authority.He began painting in watercolor while in high school and sold his first painting when he was 17. Miller studied art through every means available to him in his hometown until he entered the University of Washington and majored in fine art. He has been painting professionally since the early 1960's and full time since 1984.
