Doug's uniquely sculpted murals are visual Alaskan poetry. He combines a strong sense of image and superb crafting talent to make what he calls "sculpted wood mural assemblages". They are combinations of sculpting as well as cutting-apart and putting-together of wood pieces that form designs of exceptionally realistic images. His works often appear as though the subjects will swim or walk out of the mural toward you.Doug accomplishes this by using abstract patterns in the background, grain patterns and shapes of wood pieces and an overall design that makes the subjects flow with active realism. For subject matter, Doug draws from our Alaskan heritage, life styles and environment. His Eskimos or Indians, fishermen or hunters, seals, whales, porpoise or fish all seem to come to life in wood.Although "assemblage" has been an art form for many years, Doug is the first to use it for portraying representational images so lifelike in wood. Doug has won numerous awards including seven consecutive best of show awards, peoples choice awards and numerous other honors since he began exhibiting his work. His murals are owned by countless collectors in and outside of Alaska, and hang in many well-known government and corporate offices such as the Governor's Office, State of Alaska; the Minnesota Zoo, whale area; the Japanese Consulate; Louisiana Pacific Corporation; Alaska Marine Highway system; Minnesota Institute of Science and Man; Diamond Drilling Corporation; Russell Senate Building, Washington, DC; former Presidential Collection of Richard Nixon; and Boeing Aircraft Corporate collection just to name a few.
