The inspiration for my work is directly related to the environment in which I live and my ability to express it.I have lived in Ketchikan, Alaska since the early 70's, having emigrated to the United States from the Philippine Islands in the mid-50's. It was the move to Alaska that anchored my development as an artist and the support of the town of Ketchikan that enabled me to work as an artist. Always intrigued by the relationship between man and nature, I found in the northern landscape and Alaskan cultures a web of life at once mysterious and outrageous, primitive and modern, and wholly compelling. With sculpture as a foundation influence on my work with silver and gold, I have drawn most heavily on images of the sea and indigenous life forms for design ideas. Since 1987, I have divided my time between Alaska and the Northwest where the influences of urban architecture and urban life are emerging in the new pieces. |
