JoAnn George's intricate pen and ink drawings and reproductions depict the power and richness of the Tlingit Indian lifestyle and legends, as well as views of Southeast Alaska.Introduced to Tlingit life through her marriage into a Tlingit family and subsequent life in Angoon, an Indian village in Southeast Alaska, she interprets this knowledge through her artwork. She combines Tlingit-style designs and a representational style of art to illustrate with pen and ink the mystical aspect of the Tlingit culture and its involvement with the natural world. Pen and ink, an unforgiving linear medium, is a painstakingly slow process demanding precise and subtle control. Preceded by lengthy research, each finished drawing represents a remarkable amount of time. She has since expanded her mediums to include oil and water colors. |
