Glass
Euphrates  |  Sea Life
Fused or kiln cast glass, although less well-known than glassblowing, is an older technique and has been around for at least 4,000 years. The process was discovered by Phoenician sailors and early potters in the Tigris and Euphrates river valleys, an area then called Mesopotamia. In the fusing process glass is heated in kilns or ovens at high temperatures where it can be formed, textured, molded or otherwise manipulated. The piece is then slowly cooled, at a specific rate, to the ambient temperature. This annealing technique relieves stress in the glass and can take several hours to many days, depending on the size and thickness of the piece.
