Marianne Wieland

Arctic themes pervade Marianne Wieland’s work, legacy of the years she flew to the villages of Nome and Kotzebue as a stewardess with Alaska Airlines. Visual impressions of the far north, honed to their essential elements, appear in many of her prints, evoking a sense of that vast land and its inhabitants through archetypal forms.

Each immaculate limited edition print is an original work of art personally printed, numbered, and signed by the artist, yet all are matched as closely as hand printed methods allow.

In her spacious Anchorage studio, Marianne soaks heavy all-rag papers in warm water to soften the fibers, mixes printing inks, and rolls them onto the plates. Some print editions carry the notation “EV” to show they are evolving—the background colors change from print to print.

Though she draws upon an array of printmaking techniques, Marianne is particularly fascinated by the raised figures created through embossing. A few revolutions of the hefty hand crank on the artist’s shiny Charles Brand press smoothly transfer ink to paper, at the same time moulding the dampened paper to the embossing plate’s contours.

Marianne came to Alaska as a child in 1949 with her father, Buell A. Nesbett, Alaska’s first supreme court chief justice. After college, Marianne continued to study art at Anchorage Community College and the University of Alaska at Anchorage, with two years of independent study at the Visual Arts Center in Anchorage. She is married to Dr. Tyron S. Wieland, an Anchorage family physician, and they have two daughters. The Wieland’s chosen lifestyle includes plenty of skiing, fishing, and hunting trips in summer and fall. Every year, Marianne and her husband choose some remote area of the 49th state to explore, an enterprise that is reflected in her art.
