In Eskimo legends humans can readily turn themselves into animals and visa versa. In "Whale's Wife", a whale is swimming up the coast when he spots a beautiful young Eskimo woman digging clams. The whale asks her to marry him and she accepts. She turns herself into a whale and the two swim off to begin their life together in the sea.
