Artist's narrative: A Timber faller verifies the accuracy of the first part of his undercut in felling a mature Sitka Spruce. II Peter 1:10 admonishes one to make their "calling and election sure." Great care and skill is required to successfully fall and buck big timber.
Lifelong relationships with pioneering Alaskans, a deep appreciation for the resourcefulness of the indigenous people of Southeast Alaska, and the pristine beauty of the natural environment all serve as Stewart's inspiration.
Early mentors were boat builders and commercial fishermen. Later he worked for several years in Southeast Alaska's logging industry during which time he earned a degree in Fine Art from Seattle Pacific University. Prior to settling permanently in his beloved Southeast, he spent 3 years in Brussels, Belgium, where he worked as an illustrator.
