Karla Morreira of Whalebone Watercolors was born in southern California and moved to Maui as a teenager where she would meet her future husband Roy. Together they moved to Homer, Alaska, where Karla began pursuing her artwork and working at art festivals. Karla would eventually go back to school at the University of Alaska in Anchorage where she earned a degree in Fine Art.
Many of Karla's pieces are from stories she has written, such as "Waiting for the Tide," and "When Dragons Fly." Many times Karla's poetry or pieces come from dream imagery or, "dreamtime," as she calls it. These pieces are more personal and many times have original poetry incorporated into them. Karla mixes her own colors and uses heavy rock salt and gum arabic to create thick fields of texture.
