John Lane of Anchorage, Alaska, says about his work, "My family and friends know me as “Dapaw.” That was what my first grandson called me (instead of grandpa) and it has stuck with me 15+ years later. So nowadays I sign my work “by Dapaw.”
I love to spend time in front of my lathe. Every piece of wood is different, and I very often change my plans as I start in on a new piece and it starts to reveal its true character. I’m often asked what my favorite wood is to turn. My answer- the piece everyone else passes by. Those pieces can often turn into something nobody expects."
